The Urban Air Pollution Crisis | A Breath of Fresh Air for London
Air pollution is one of the biggest environmental and human health problems facing the world today; with more than 80 percent of urban residents living with higher levels than the guideline set by the World Health Organisation. This project proposes the transformation of London as an ‘active travel city’; enabling the creation of a street model where pedestrians are prioritised.
Using research conducted by Ferranti et al. (2019), a series of cohesive design and plant strategies have been developed for different situations to ensure air quality improvement opportunities are maximised throughout the city, providing the opportunity to simultaneously tackle other urban problems such as storm water management and urban heat island.
